Stratix switch selections for Device Level Ring (DLR)

Stratix 2000, 2500, 5410, 6000, 8000 and 8300 switches cannot directly be part of the Device Level Ring (DLR) because these switch versions do not support DLR.

Select hardware versions of the Stratix 5700 switches can support one DLR ring as of firmware release 15.2(3)EA1.fc2 (CIP v5.001).
Select hardware versions of (Armor) Stratix 5700 switches can participate in the DLR and act as the ring supervisor as of firmware release 15.2(3)EA1 (CIP v5.001)

  • Two of the 10 port versions catalog numbers: 1783-BMS10CGP and 1783-BMS10CGN
  • All of the 20 port versions of the Stratix 5700
  • All of the Power Over Ethernet (PoE) versions of the Stratix 5700
  • Four of the ArmorStratix versions catalog numbers: 1783-ZMS4E4T2GP, 1783-ZMS8E8T2GP, 1783-ZMS8E8T2GN, and 1783-ZMS8E8T2GN
  • The Stratix 5700 can be a node or a supervisor in a DLR

All Stratix 5400 switches support up to 3 DLR rings on the same VLAN as of firmware release 15.2(5)EA.fc4 (CIP v3.001).
All Stratix 5400 switches support up to 3 DLR rings on different VLANs as of firmware release v15.2(6)E0a (CIP v4.001).

Stratix 5800 switches with Advances Features support DLR as of firmware release 17.11.

For more information on these switches including Catalog numbers, User Manuals, Product Selection Guides, etc see theEtherNet/IP Network Site and select the switch category.

If a Stratix switch cannot be configured to participate in the DLR ring (when not supported) and a connection to the DLR ring is required, you must use a 1783-ETAP module and connect the switch to the Device Port on the 1783-ETAP module. Refer to theEtherNet/IP Embedded Switch Technology Application Guide, publication ENET-AP005, for further help.

You must use the Smartport setting of Multiport Device for Automation. If your Stratix switch does not have this setting then you must update to the latest firmware revision.

DLR port Choices and Considerations

The Stratix 5700 switches will support one DLR ring. Only two DLR ports on a switch are permitted because only one ring is supported. DLR ports function only as Access ports and not Trunk ports. There are selected ports/interfaces that can be used for DLR ports.
Please reference IN1552 – Stratix 5700 switch DLR Ports and QA42219 – Stratix 5400 DLR ports

Depending on your network architecture, DLR topology limitations can exist. Ports configured as DLR do not support the following:

  • EtherChannels
  • NAT (Network Address Translation)
  • REP (Resilient Ethernet Protocol)
  • MST/PVST/RPVST
  • Flex Links
  • 802.1x Security
  • Multiple VLANs (trunking) (Exception: 15.2(7)E firmware introduced DLR VLAN Trunking. See technote QA45744 – Stratix DLR VLAN Trunking for details)
  • Smartport roles (Exception: Multiport Automation Device and None are supported on ports configured as DLR ports)

Note: If using the Stratix 5700 with DLR, devices on the DLR ring can still be translated through the NAT boundary so long as the ring is on the Fast Ethernet ports.

There are no specific number of maximum switches on a DLR. See the following reference for practical limits for DLR:

Configuring DLR

DLR can be configured via the Device Manager, CLI (Command Line Interface), and AOP (Add-On Profile). DLR cannot be configured via RSLinx Classic.
