Answer

The Stratix switches can operate out-of-the-box without assigning an IP address to it or without going through Express Setup.

When the Stratix switch does not have an IP address on it, the user is limited to using the status indicators on the front panel of the switch for diagnostics. The switch still functions as a managed switch, but the management of devices is not optimized for industrial applications and only limited switch features will be enabled (like MSTP spannng-tree protocol). It is therefore highly recommended to perform the express setup in order to enable and make use of the majority of the managed switch features.
